Living with a socialized and friendly dog can be a dream. Living with an unsocialized, asocial, or antisocial dog can be a nightmare. Puppies must be taught to enjoy the company and actions of all people and especially to thoroughly enjoy being hugged and handled (by children) and restrained and examined (by their owners, veterinarians and groomers).

The Critical Period of Socialization is already two thirds over by the time most people get their puppies at eight weeks of age. Consequently, owners have just one month to socialize their puppies with people. Puppies must be socialized before they have had all their shots and before they venture into the great outdoors. However, socialization may be easily (and enjoyable) accomplished in the safety of the puppy’s new home.
